The colour is sprayed onto the shirt using compressed air. This has the effect of nebulising the colour which results in a flawless surface and a smooth blend of the different colours. Airbrush is used in art as well as in spray-paintings.
The origin of the airbrush technique goes back to the year 1878. An American jeweller was the first to construct an airbrush and patented it in April 1882. To his patent application he added a self portrait which he retouched with his invention.
The first pictures that were airbrushed were rejected by art lovers and museums as the new technique of airbrush was not seen as art then. Around the 1960s there was a development of new genres of art such as photorealism and hyperrealism. However, it was not until 1970 that airbrush was recognized as art. One of the first German airbrush artists is Gernot Bubenik. One of the most famous airbrush artists is H.G. Giger. Today the airbrush technique is used for many different areas such as advertisement, custom painting, bodypainting etc.
